CREATING WEAPON TYPES

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

Howdy, I am back again with some weapon idea updates. I am still deciding how many different weapon there should be since I will have to give each one its own "theme". I am pulling inspiration from video games like Dark Souls and leaning heavily into keywords like there is in the game Star Wars: Legion.
I don't think I mentioned before how a weapon is actually used but at the bottom is the attack profile in the gray oval. The black square with a number in it is to show how many times that weapon can be activated in a round. The second icon is for AP (action points). You must spend that much AP to use the weapon. The second Icon is dice to roll (the Hacksaw rolls 2 attack dice). Then, the results directly after that shows what result is needed to be a successful hit. and lastly, the icon with a sword tells you how much damage each hit will do.*
This is still very early in the works so the theme each weapon gets is pretty bare bones, but here we go!

AXES

Axes will probably always have the Pierce keyword which will negate any enemy that has armor. I am thinking it will always have slots for purple Materia which is stat boosting skills. I posted a second axe in the photo called the Smoke Axes. Many axes will also have the Bleed X keyword. When you attack an enemy you will place a token next to their token. When the bleed number meets the amount of tokens on an enemy, you will roll 1D4 and the enemy takes that amount of damage. This idea is pulled right out of Elden Ring!

SWORDS

Swords will probably be able to hold all types of Matera instead of mainly focusing on one color. They will often have a longer reach and deal more with elemental damage. The Laser Sword has the Lightning 1 keyword which means if it attacks an enemy that is weak to that element, you will roll +1 attack dice. The Stick Sword has no elemental built in but gains Range 2. this saves you from having to spend AP on movement and focus on hitting enemies from a distance and making for better positioning.

DAGGERS

Daggers i think are going to be the most weapons. They deal mostly with Orange Materia which is all about moving fast, dodging attacks and stabbing enemies in the back. I am a fan of the dark souls games and the inspiration for daggers and orange Materia will be like playing Sekiro for comparison. This dagger has Swift 1, which will add +1 dice when you attempt to dodge an attack. Back Stab 1 lets you re-roll 1 attack dice if youare standing behind an enemy.

HAMMERS

Hammers will be a bit of a odd duck compared to the others. It will not host any Materia types and lean more towards rolling more dice, and brute forcing your way through enemies. The Smash 1 Keyword will add +1 dice to your attack if an enemy has the Small keyword. Enemies may have multiple weaknesses and many of them will be weak to these Hammers. The rock Clobber has Unwieldy, which will not allow you to re-roll attack dice. this is not a great keyword BUT it also has Crit 8. When you roll attack dice, if any result is an 8, you will roll one more dice. You can end up rolling quite a bit of dice this way by attacking enemies that are weak to hammers, rolling 8's and abusing the powers of some equipped Materia. the Globmnir hammer is great for positioning as it will push an enemy 2 spaces away after its attacked. you can position yourself to actually move the enemy towards other players, saving them the AP from moving and focusing on slaying some goons! Side note: If you cannot pronounce the name Globmnir, it is acceptable to call this weapon "Jonathan".

STAFFS

This will be the "magic" weapon and will lean much more heavily in giving you extra Materia slots. besides Swords this will be the only weapon that will let you hold Green Materia which will be the healing and party buffs skills. Ferazel Wand doesn't roll a bunch of dice and rolling a 6 on a D8 is kinda crappy, BUT the HP Drain 1 keyword is really nice. Whenever that weapon wounds an enemy you gain 1HP, nice! The Giant Bone staff loses the Hp Drain keyword but it hits a little harder and you gain a Red Materia Slot which will be the Damage focused skills.

And that is all I got for now. This game is coming together really fast and I have so many more ideas to put to the test!
